Description:
The tale of how King Alfred insists the Danish Kings be baptised at Westminster. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'A' introduce the tale of how the Danes who had gone into France with Gurmond return to England. The tale of the death of King Alfred, and how he was a good king, who authored many books about the kings of England. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

for to werre ne no debate arrere // And more ouer þey bihighte to þe king Alured þat þey wolde gon and bringe hire owene king vnto him: and þat hire king and þey alle shulde ben baptiȝede and vppon þis condiciou(~) king Alured ham g(ra)untede lif and ly- me and saide to ham þat þey shulde gon hire king for to fecche(~) and at a certayn day to comen aȝen þat to ham was sette and so þey wente forth faste and comen aȝen at hire day þ(t) was assigned and alle þe Danoys brouȝte hire king with ham // þe king Alured anon lete ham ben baptiȝede and hire names chaunge. so þat þe king of danoys called was Athel ston. and. xxxti. of his felawes names were chaunged also. & þe oþ(er)e were baptiȝede to þe right bileue and al þis was done at Westmynstr(e). And aft(er) þat þe king Alured held w(t) him king Athulston(~) and alle his danoys .xij. dayes at soiourne with much solempnyte and ȝaf ham grete ȝiftes aft(er) þat þey wer(e) and so þey dep(ar)tede // þo was king Alured al at ese whan he had his enemys ou(er)come and þat þey were tornede to þe bileue of Almyghti god How þe Danoys þat comen in to ff(ra)unce w(t) Gurmond comen aȝen in to Engelonde and of þe deth of king [...] Alured Capitulo Centesimo nono. And þus it bifel [...] afterward þat þe Danoys of Northumb(er)land þat were paynymes comen wiþ a gret host of ff(ra)unce þat is to vnder stonde w(t) ham þat wente in to ff(ra)unce w(t) Gurmound and Au frik whan he had conq(ue)red Engelonde and it ȝaf vn to Saxo n(es) an þo þat come fro ff(ra)unce arryuede in kent and sente in to Northumbirlond þat þey shulde come to ham and whan ne þo .ij. hostes were come and assemblede. anon þey wente to dest(ro)ye þ(e) c(ri)stene peple of Engelond fram place vn to place and deden muche sorwe // Hit bifel þus as almighty god it wolde an harde chaunce in Engelonde. for þ(e) goode king Alu- rede þat was woned to abate þe danoys deyde in þ(e) mene tyme þis Alured regnede .xxxti. ȝer. and a good king had ben and wel couþe chastise his enemys for he was a good clerk and lete make menye bookes and o. book he made of englissh
