The tale of the martyrdom of Saint Edmund. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'W' introduce the tale of how Hubba and Hungar (Hinguar) take the town of Reading (Redyng), and then do battle with Kings Elfride and Edelf, and King Eldrede and his brother Alvred (Alfred). The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

and wheþ(er) þat he shal askape or dye at gode(s) wille mote it be // Whenne sent Edmund had nempned god: by þat þey wisten alle þat it was he him self and anon. Hub- ba and Hungar nomen him and saide þat he shulde god forsake and alle cristene lawe as meny oþ(er)e had done þourgh ham biforne// And sent Edmund saide þat he nolde ne- uere but raþere he wolde soffre deþ for goddes loue and his lawes to kepe // þo nome þey king Edmund and bounde him vnto a tre and made hire archers to him shete wiþ arwes: til þat his body stikede as ful of arwes as a hirchoun is ful of prikkes: but for al þe payne þat he had. he wolde neu(er)e god forsake. and in þe same py- ne and turment he deide and bitoke his soule to al- mighty god and whanne þey sawe þ(t) he was ded: þey smyten of his heued and in þis manere was sent Ed mund y martred How Hubba. and Hunguar toke þe toun of Redynge. Capitulo. Centesimo Sexto. Whanne sent Edmund was martred. Hunguar. and Hubba. wente þennes with alle hire Danoys vn to Redyng. and as þey wente þiderward: þey brende toune(s) and citees and quelden alle c(ri)stene peple þat wolde noȝt god forsake and caste a doun chirches and comyn to Redyn- ge and token þe toun and þere helde ham til þat þe king Edelf of Westsex come þider w(t) al his poer for to take þe toun(~) // þo comen out þe Danoys for to ȝeue bataile to king Edelf. and at þat bataile was queld þe Erl of Da noys þat me callede Cydrak // vppon þe morwe come þe king Eldred and his broþ(er) Alured wiþ a st(ro)ng poer. and a gret host. and þe king Edelf come aȝen þat þat hadde foughten þ(e) day bifore to þ(t) bataile and þe Danoys þo co- men out for to fighte w(t) ham. and þe bataile was won- der st(ro)ng for many a man was þere slayn. and þ(e) Danoys þat day had þe victorie and þe king Eldred and his broþ(er) Alured þat day were descomfited but þe fourtenþ(e)
