Description:
King Offa reigns, and there is much fighting between the kings in the land. King Alfred's Chronicles are written and kept safe at Wynchestre (Winchester). Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'A' introduce the tale of King Osebright of Northumberland, and how he rapes Buerne's wife. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

þat was sent Oswaldes broþ(er). þis Ossa conquerede alle þe kin- ges of þe lande and regnede a boue ham alle // And so gret was þe werre in eu(er)y cuntre bituene kinges þat noman mighte wyte how þe lande wente But Abbotes. P(ri)ours. and men of religiou(~) writen þe lyfes and þe dedes of kinges and how lon- ge eu(er)ich regned had: and in what cuntre and in what man(er)e eu(er)ich king deide. and of Bisshoppes also: and þ(er)of þey made grete bookes and lete calle ham þe Cronicles and þe good king Alured had þat book in his warde and lete bringe it to Wyn- chestr and lete it faste ben takked to a piler þat men mighte nought remeue ne bere it þennes so þat eu(er)y ma(~) mighte it see and þ(er)oppon loke for þ(er)inne beþ þe lifes of alle þe kinges þat eu(er)e were in Engelond How þe king of Northumber land Osbright forlay þe wyf of Buerne Bocard þorugh strengthe. and aftir þis Buerne conquerede þe king with [...] poer and strengthe Capo.Cmo.iijo. And thus it bifel in þ(e) [...] same tyme þat þer was a king in Northumberland þat me callede. Osbright and soiournede in ȝork and þis king wente him vppon a day in to a woode him for to des- porte: and whanne he come aȝen he wente p(ri)uyly into a good mannes house þat me callede Buerne and þe goode man of þe place was gon þat time to þe see. for often times he was woned þere aspie and awaite þefes and robbours þat often times were wonede .come in to þe londe to robby and brenne and slee // þe lady þat was þis Buernes wif was a wonder fair woma(~) and welcomed þe king with muchel hono(ur) and worthily him seruede in al þing // whan þe king had eten he nome þe lady by þe hond and ladde hire in to chambr and seyde þat he wolde speke wiþ hire a counceil. and al þe folc fram þe chambre he made voyde. sauf only þe lady and he but þe lady wiste nouȝt/ wherfore he it dede til þat he had done wiþ hire his wille. and whan he had done þis dede. he turnede aȝen to ȝork And þe lady he lefte þere wonde(er) sore wepynge for þe dede þat he had
