gonne faste it inhabite at hir owne wille and þey wolde haue made newe kinges and lordes. but þey mighte neu(er)e assenten to haue onleche o king for to ben to him entendau(~)t and þ(er)fore þey maden manye kinges in diu(er)se shires. as it was in Engestes time // þe ferste kingdome was kent & þat oþ(er) Southsex and þe þridde. Westsex. and þe ferþ(e) Essex. and þe fifthe. Northumberlond and þe sixþe Estangle þ(t) is to sayne. Northfolc. and. Southfolc. and þe seueneþe Mer- chenoroth. and þat is þe Erldome of Nichole. Huntyngdon Herforde. Gloucestr. Wynchestr. Warwyk and Derby and so departede þe englisshe al Engelonde in to vij. partes. And aft(er) þat it bifel þat þo kinges werrede ofte times to gedre and eu(er) he þat was strengest binome him þ(t) was feblest and so it was long time þat þey nadde no king crouned amonges ham ne no c(ri)stene ma(~) was þo among(es) ham ne c(ri)stendome noþ(er). but were paynymes .l. ȝere til þat sent Gregory was pope of Rome þat had seyn children of þe naciou(~) in þe cite of Rome þat were wonder faire creatu- res and hadde grete wille and desire ham for to biholde and axede of þe Marchauntȝ whennes þey were and of what nacioun(~). and men tolde him(~) þat þey were of Engelond & Englissh þey weren callede. but þey and al þe peple of En- gelonde were paynymes and bilueden nouȝt vppon god Allas quod sent Gregory wel mowen þey ben callede Englisshe for þey haueþ þe visage of aungel and þ(er)fore wel auȝte þey þanne ben cristene. and for þis enchesoun(~) sent Gregory sente Sent Austyn in to Engelond. and. xl. goo- de men wiþ him þat were of good lyf and holy men to preche and teche and to conu(er)te þe Englisshe peple and ham turnede to god. and þat was in þe .vje. ȝere þat se(~)t Gregory had ben pope þat is to seyn aft(er) þe Jncarnaciou(~) of oure lord ihu(~) crist. v.
