Description:
The tale of how Gurmonde's army burn the town of Chichester. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'W' introduce the tale of how Gurmonde gave the land of Britain to the Saxons, and how it was henceforth known as' Engistes land' (England) after the Saxon Engist. There is a smudged ink annotation at the top of the folio. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

queyntise for to brenne þe toun(~). þey maden engynes with glew an of nettes and token peces of tinder and of fire & bounde to þe sparwes feet/: and afterward lete ham fle & þey anon right fley and loggede ham in þe toun(~) þere þat hire nestes were and in stakkes and in euesynges of house and þe fire bigan anon to tende and brende al þe toun(~) & whanne þe Britou(~)s sawe þe toun(~) brenne in eu(er)y side þey hiede ham out and faught but anon þey were slayn & descomfited and whiles þe bataile durede þe king p(ri)ue lech hud him and stal a way in to Walis and men wiste neu(er)e where he bicome. and so was þe toun(~) of Chichestre taken and destroyed // And aft(er) wente Gurmonde and destroyede citees and tounes. þat neu(er)e weren aft(er)ward made aȝen as it is sene ȝit in manye stedes How þis land was cleped Engelond for þe name of Engist and how manye kinges were made aft(er) in þe londe. Co. xxiiij. xvjto. Whanne Gurmond had wasted and destroyed al þe lande þourgh out he ȝaf þe lond to þe Saxon(es). anon þey toke it wiþ good wille. for þe Saxones long tyme had desired it for as muche as þey were of Engistes kynrede þat first had al þe lond of Britaigne and þo lete ham ben called englisshe men. for enchesou(~) of Engistes name and þe londe þey lete calle it Engelonde . in hire langage and þe folc beþ called Englisshe me(~). for as mu- che as in his time it was called Engistes lond. Whanne he had conquered it of king Vortig(er). þat had spoused his doughter. but fram þe time þat Brut come ferst in to Enge- lond þis land was called Britaigne and þe folc Britouns til þe time þat þis Gurmond eftsones conquerede it and ȝaf it vnto þe Saxon(es) and þey anon right chaungede þe name as bifore is sayde // And whanne þis was done Gurmond passede ouer in to ff(ra)unce and þ(er)e conquerede many landes and destroyede al c(ri)stene peple þere þat he come and þe danoys duellede in þis lande and by-
