kepten þe toun Wel and horpedely // And in þe mene tyme Coleg(re)n lete þe toun to Bladulf and fley him self to Cheldrik þat was king of Almayne for to haue of him socour and þ(e) king assembled a gret poer and come and arryuede in Scot- land with .v.C. shipes // And whanne Arthur wiste of þis tyding þat he had nouȝt poer and strengthe j nough to fiȝte aȝen Cheldrik he lete ben þe seege and wente to Londou(~) and sente anon his l(et)res to þe king of litel Britaigne þat me callede hoel his neuew his suster sone þat he shulde come to him w(t) al þe power þat he miȝte and he assem- bled a gret ost and arryuede at South(a)mptou(~) // And whan king Arthur it wiste he was glad ynough and wente aȝens ham and ham resceyuede w(t) muchel hono(ur) so þat þo .ij. hostes ham assemblede and token hire wey euene to Nicholl þat Cheldrik had biseged but nouȝt ȝit taken. And þey comen vppon. Cheldrik. and oppon his peple or þey it wiste þ(er)e þat þey were and and ham egrely assailede // The king Chel- drik and his mayne defendede ham manly by here poer but king Arthur and his me(~) quelde so manye Saxones þat neu(er)e ere was seyn such a slaughtr and Cheldrik & his me(~) þ(t) were left a life. fledden a way : and Arthur ham pursuede and drof ham in to a wode þat þey myghte no ferþere passe // Cheldrik and his men sawe wel þat þey were brouȝt in to muche disese and ham ȝolden to Arthur in þis man(er) wise þat he shulde take her hors and hire Ar mure and al þat þey hadde þat þey moste onliche gon in foote to hire shippes and so þey wolde gon in to hire owe ne lande and neu(er)e come aȝen in to þis lande and oppo(~) assuraunce of þis þing þey ȝeuen him goode hostages. And Arthur þorugh councel of his men g(ra)unted þis þing and resceyuede þe hostages: and oppon þis þese oþ(er)e wen- ten to hire shippes. and whanne þey weren in þe hie see hire wille chaungede as þe deuel it wolde and þey re- tournede hire nauye and comen a3en in to þis lande
