cuntre was ȝeven longe bifore to Horne þorugh Vortiger þo he hadde spoused his cosyn þe(r) he had made a faire castell þat me called Horncastel after his owene name // And Vortymer was so annoyed for his broþ(er)es deth Catagren þat he was ded in such manere wherfore anon he lete felle þe castel to grounde and af- ter þat he ne lefte night ne day til he had dryuen out Engist and al his peple of þe lande // And whanne Engist was dryuen a way . Renewenne his doughter made sorwe ynowgh and queyn tely spak to ham þat were next þe king Vortimer and p(ri)uyest with him and so muche she ȝaf ham of ȝiftes þat he was apoy- sened and deide at Londou(~)þe .iiij. ȝere of his regne and þere he lith . How þe Britouns chosen anoþ(er) time Vortiger to ben hire king and Engist come in to þis lande aȝen and þey foughten togi [...] // dere Capo. lixo. After Vortimers deth þe Britouns by [...] here comune assent eftsones makede Vortiger hir king oppon þis couenaunt / þat he shulde neu(er) after soffren Engist ne none of his eftsones shulde come in to þis lande // And whanne al þis was done Ronowenne þe queene p(ri)uyly sente by lettre to Engist þat she had enpoysoned Vortimer and þat Vortiger hir lord aȝen bar þe croune and regnede and þat he shulde come aȝen in to þat lande well arraiede with muche peple for to avenge him oppon þe britouns and to wynne his lande aȝen // Of þis tidinge Engist made gret ioye and apparaillede him hastely wi .xv. Ml. men þat were doughty in eu(er)y bataile // And whan Vortiger herde telle þat Engist was come aȝen with a gret poer in to þis lande he assemblede his britouns and þo wente aȝens Engist for to haue ȝeue him bataile and his folc : but Engist dred him sore of þe britouns for þey had scomfited him biforn hand and dryuen oute wiþ strengþ(e) wherfore Engist prayede of a loue day and seide he was nouȝt comen in to þis lande for to fighte but to haue his lande aȝen of Kent ȝif he mighte acorde wiþ þe britouns and of ham haue grace // þe king Vorti- ger porugh councel of his britou(~)s g(ra)untede a loue day and þus it was ordeigned þorugh þe britou(~)s þat same loueday shulde
