The text begins imperfectly at the top of the folio at 'wheder to wende'. Red rubrication and illuminated initial ' A ' introduce the tale of King Vortiger, and how Saxons Engist and Horn come to England to seek refuge. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

wheder to wende How Engist and xi Ml. men . comen in to þis lande to whom Vortiger ȝaf a place þat called is Twong- [...] castell Cao. lvjo. And sone after þis sorwe tyding come [...] to Vortiger þat a gret nauye of st(ra)ungers were arryuede in þe cuntre of kent . but he wiste nouȝt whennes þei were ne wher fore þey were come // The king sente anon a messag(e) þeder þat some of ham shulde come and speke wiþ him for to wite what folc þey weren and what þei axede and in to what cuntre þey wolden gon // þere were .ij. breþ(er)en p(ri)nces i(~) maistres of þat st(ra)un- ge companye þat on me callede Engist and þat oþ(er) Horn. Engist wente to þe king and tolde to him enchesou(~) wherfore þey were þere arryued in his lande and saide sire we ben of a cuntre þt called is Saxoyne þat is þe lande of Germayne wher inne is so muche sorwe þat ȝif þe peple be so muche þt þe lande may ham nouȝt susteyne ne suffise . þe maistres and p(ri)nces þat ha- ueþ þe lande to gou(er)ne and rewele shulleth don come biforne ham men and womme(~)þat boldest þat ben amonge ham for to fighte þat best mowe t(ra)uaile in to diu(er)se landes and so þey shulle ham ȝiue hors and harneys armure and all þing þat ham nedeth and after þey shulle seye to ham þat þey gon in to anoþ(er) cuntre where þat þey mowe leuen as here auncestr(e)s deden bifore ham : And þ(er)fore sire king ȝif ȝe haue ouȝt to done wiþ oure companye we ben comen in to ȝoure lande and with good wille ȝow wile serue and ȝoure lande helpe kepe and de- fend fram ȝoure enemys ȝif þat ȝow nede // Whanne Vortiger herde þis tidinge . he seide he wolde gladly wiþholde ham vp on such couenant ȝif þey mighte deliu(er)e his lande of his ene- mys : he wolde ȝiue ham resonable landes where þey shulden duelle for eu(er)more // Engist þankede him goodliche and in þi(s) manere he and his companye .xj. Ml. men . shulde duelle wt þe king Vortig(er) and so muche þey deden þorugh hire boldenesse þat þey delyuerede þe lande clene of his enemys // þo prayde Engist þe king of so muche lande þat he mighte make to him a citee for him and for his maynye // þe king ansuerede it
