Description:

The tale of how Donewall (Donebaud) was the first king to wear a gold crown in Britain. After his death, how his sons Brenne and Belyn divided the land, and then fought for control. Each tale is introduced by red rubrication and an illuminated initial. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

þe lande and wel mayntenede it in pes and in quiete þat neu(er) bifore it was wel mayntened How Doneband was þe firste king þat eu(er) werede coroune of golde in Britaigne . Co. xxmo. This Doneband lete him done maken a croune of golde and wered hit oppon his heuede as neu(er)e king dede by fore and he ordeynede a statut þat had a man done neuer so much harme and he mighte come in to þe temple shulde no man him misdo . but gon þ(er) in sauf and in pees and after gon in to what cuntre þat he wolde wiþoute ony harme and ȝif ony man sette hand vppon him he þanne shulde lese his lyf And þis Doneband made þe toun(~) of Malmesbury and þe toun(~) of þe . Vise . and whanne he had regned wel and worþily fourty ȝere he deide and lith at newe Troye How Brenne and Belyn departede bituen ham þe land after þe deth of Do- [...] neband hire fader and of þe werre Co xxjo. And after þat [...] þis Doneband was ded his sones þat he had departed þe lande bituene ham as hire fader had ordeyned . so þat Be lyn his eldeste sone had al þe lande of Britaigne a þes half Humber . And his broþ(er) Brenne had al þe land fram Humber in to Scotland . but for as muche þat Belyn had þe bettre part Brenne þ(er)fore wax wroþ and wolde haue had more of þe lande . and belyn his broþ(er) wolde g(ra)unte him nomore Wher fore contak and werre aros bituen hem too . But Brenne þe ȝonger broþ(er) had no myght ne strengthe aȝens belyn & þerfore Brenne þorugh counceile of his folc wente þennes in to Norweye to þe king Elsinges and prayede him of help and of socour for to conquere al þe lande oppon Belyn . his broþ(er) oppon þat couenaunt þat he wolde haue his dough- ter to wyf and þe king Elsing him g(ra)untede // Belyn anon as his broþ(er) was gon to Norwey . he seisede in to his hand al þe lande of Northumberlande and toke alle þe Castelles and lete ham arraye and also kepe þe costes of þe see þat Brenne shulde nouȝt arryue in no syde but þat he were take // þe king Elsinges lete assemble a gret host and delyu(er)ed
