of Scotland was so annoyed of him and of his pople þat anon she and hir lord speken to gidres . wherfore his knigh- tes . half and his squiers fram him were gon and no mo leste but onliche . xxxti . and whan þis was don Leir bigan to make muche sorwe for enchesou(~) þat his state was enpey- rede and men had of him more scorn & despit þa(~) eu(er) þey had biforne wherfore he niste what for to done and at þe last þoughte þat he wolde wende in to Cornewaile to Ragan his oþ(er) doughter // And whan he was come þe Erl and his wif þat was Leir(es) dought(er) him welcomede and with him made moche ioye and þ(er)e he duelled w(t) xxxti . knightes and squiers . and he ne hadde nought duelled þ(er)e scarsly tuelf mounþ þat his dought(er) of him nas ful and of his compa nye and hir lord and she of him hadde scorn and despite so þat fram . xxxti . knightes þey broughten in to . x . and af- terward fyue and so þ(er) lefte with him no mo . // þo made he sorwe y nough and saide sore wepinge Allas þat eu(er) he come in to þat lande and saide . ȝit hadde me be bet tre for to haue duelled with my ferst dought(er) and anon went þennes aȝen to his ferst dought(er) . but anon as she saugh him come she swer by god and his holy names and by as moche as she mighte þat he shulde haue no mo with him but o knight ȝif he wolde þ(er)e abide // þo bigan Leir aȝen wepe and made moche sorwe and saide þo al- las now to longe haue y leued þat þis sorwe and mes- chief is to me now falle . for now am y pouere þat som- tyme was riche : but now haue j no frend ne kyn þat me wil done ony manere good . // But whan þat j was riche alle men me honourede and worshipede and now eu(er)y man haþ of me scorn and despite . and now j wot wel þat Cordeill my ȝonge doughter saide me treuthe whan she saide as muche as y hadde so muche shulde y be by- loued and al þe while þat j had good : þo was j beloued and honoured for my richesse but my . ij . doughtres
