Description:
The story of the 33 daughters of King Dioclician (Diocletian), Albyne and her sisters, who were wedded to 33 kings. The text ends imperfectly at the end of this folio at 'þe ladyes herden'. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.
Transcription:
þat were hire lordes wolde haue chastisede hire with faire speche ; and by hestes and also for ʒiftes and warnede ham in faire manere vppon al loue and frendshipp . þat þey shulde amen de here luther condiciouns but al it was for nought ; for þey deden here owen will in all þinges þat ham likede and had of poer : wherfore þo xxxiij. kynges . vppon a tyme and often tymes beten hire wifes ; for þey wende þat þey wolde haue amended here tacches and here wikked þewes; but of suche condiciou(~)s þey were ; þat for faire speche and warnynge þey deden þe wers . and for betynges eftsones muche wers. // Wherfore þe kyng þat had wedded Albyne wrote þe tacches and þe condiciouns of his wyf Albyne. and þe lettre sente to Dioclician hire fader // And whanne þe othere kynges herde . þat Albynus lord had sent lettre to Dioclician. anon þey sente lettres enseled with hire seleʒ þe condiciouns and þe tacches of here wyfes // when þe kyng Dioclician saugh and herde so manye playntes of his doughtres; he was sore a- shamed and bycom wonder ang(er) and wroth toward his doughtres and thoughte boþe nyght and day how he þo myghte amende it þat þey so mysdede / and anon sente his lettres vnto þo xxxiij. kynges þat þey shulde come to hy(~) and bringe with ham here wifes eu(er)ychon at certeyn day. for he wolde þere chastise hem of here wickednesse .yf he myghte in eny manere wyse. // So þat þe kynges comen all at þe day and tyme þat þo was set bituene ham . and the kyng Dioclician . ham vnderfenge with muchel hono(ur) . and made a solempne feste . to alle þat weren vnder his lordshipp And þe thrid day of þ(t) sole(~)pnite . þe kyng Dioclician sente for his .xxxiij. doughtres þat þey shulde come and speke w(t) hym in his chambre and whan þey were comen he spak vnto ham of hire wickednesse and of hire cruelte and dis- pitously ham reproued and vndernam and to ham he saide þat ʒif þey wolde nouʒt ben chastised þey shulde his loue lese for euere more . // And whanne þe ladyes herden
